Attention All DIY’s

If you find yourself asking, “Where do I start? Will I need a General Contractor or just Carpentry?  Am I considering a room addition or repair work?” The answer depends on the scope of the project and with 50 years of field experience in Residential Remodeling in Chicago’s Northshore , I can help steer you in the right direction.

If a permit is needed for a larger project you may need architectural drawings. You should obtain referrals from family, friends or business relationships such as the contractor that you hire. A positive rapport between yourself and the professionals that you hire will keep your project running smoothly.

Once you have narrowed down your perspective contractors it is time for the bidding process to begin. Do not let the lowest bid influence your choice of a contractor just because they are the least expensive-choose one in the middle.

Select the contractor that is a skilled professional with many years of field experience and is local. Ask to view current pictures of their projects. Obtain a certificate of insurance showing business liability and workman’s compensation before any work begins.

Now that you have selected your contractor, review the contract. It should state an approximate start and end date, list operations, noted materials and drawings and a price estimate.

A weekly review is suggested regarding the progress of the project and any unanticipated extras.
